Toyota Motor’s labour union is planning to demand a basic monthly pay hike for the first time in four years at the next annual round of bargaining in the spring, industry sources told Kyodo News on Wednesday.

The Toyota union reportedly is expected to demand a pay hike of between 1,000 and 2,000 yen per month.
The 58,000-member Toyota Motor Workers’ Union refrained from demanding basic pay hikes for three years amid a deflationary economy and intensifying international competition, the report noted.
But with the economy on the upturn, growing vehicle sales have led to a sharp rise in production at Toyota while the Japan Business Federation, the largest Japanese business lobby also known as Nippon Keidanren, has indicated that it will not oppose pay hikes during spring 2006 bargaining, the news agency noted.
