The Japanese News Digest reports that Toyota plans to expand its production capacity in Europe and south Africa in order to achieve its goal of selling 1.2 million cars in Europe in 2010.

Toyota Motor will increase the annual output of three vehicle production factories in the UK, South Africa and Turkey by 200,000 units by 2005. The company plans to increase the output of its UK factory to 300,000 cars by the end of 2004 from 220,000 currently. The UK plant produces Corolla and Avensis sedans.


The annual output of the plant in South Africa is expected to increase to 200,000 cars by 2005 from 100,000 cars currently, the report said. Toyota plans to overhaul the plant into a production base specialising in Corolla sedans. The plant will export 80,000 Corollas annually from South Africa into Europe.


The annual production of the factory in Turkey is expected to increase to 200,000 cars, up by 50,000 cars compared to the current level.


Toyota sold over 800,000 cars in Europe in 2003 and held a 4.7 pct share of the European market.
