A Toyota vehicle production joint venture in China is to be relocated and its output boosted.

Sichuan FAW Toyota Motor (SFTM), a joint venture with China FAW Group (FAW) in Sichuan Province plans to relocate its Chengdu City plant by the first half of 2010 and increase annual capacity to 30,000 vehicles from the current 13,000.

Moving to the city’s Longquan economic development zone and the capacity increase is expected to cost about RMB3.6bn ($US256m). Once completed, SFTM’s total annual production capacity – when combined with the annual production capacity of its plant in Changchun City, Jilin Province – will be 40,000 vehicles.

The plants build niche models such as the Prius hybrid, Prado (Colorado) SUV and Coaster minibus.

A ground-breaking ceremony was held on Monday at the new plant site.
