The switch was a potential fire risk, the automaker said. Around 82,000 cars of four models made between January and August 2005 have been recalled.

Toyota said the switch had caused at least one fire last year. There were no casualties.

This is the latest in a series of recalls for Toyota. In, September, the company said it was to recall 3.8m vehicles in the US – reportedly its largest ever recall in that market – to check for incorrectly installed or incorrect driver’s floor mats that could jam the accelerator pedal.

In August, it recalled some 95,700 cars and crossovers sold in the US after discovering that icing in cold temperatures could impair the braking system.

In the same month, Toyota called back 688,314 Camry and other sedans made at its two China joint ventures from Tuesday, its largest recall in the country, to fix faulty electric window switches.
