Its sibling Aqua (exported as the Prius c) subcompact hybrid came second, followed by Honda’s N Box minivehicle.
The ranking underscores the strong consumer attraction of fuel-efficient hybrids and minivehicles in Japan, the report noted.
Sales of the Prius totaled 132,472 units, but were down 27.1% year on year. The third generation model has been logging smaller sales since the government ended its subsidies for eco-friendly vehicles.
The government’s incentive programme helped push up sales of the Prius in the first half of last year.
