Toyota is planning to increase overseas production to 5m cars a year from 2008, an increase of 40% compared to 2005, according to the Nihon Keizai Shimbun newspaper.

In North America there will be a 20% increase in production to 1.84m units thanks to the opening of new plants in Texas and Canada.
In Asia, excluding Japan and China, production is expected to increase by more than 1m units, partly through the opening of a third production plant in Thailand to produce the IMV (innovative multipurpose vehicle) designed for emerging markets.
In China, production is expected to rise more than fourfold to 600,000 units (134,500 in 2005).
In Japan, Toyota is expecting production of 4.15m units, bringing total global production to 9.1m vehicles.

By GlobalDataLast week another Japanese newspaper reported that Toyota would be producing fewer vehicles at its new San Antonio, Texas plant in 2007 than originally planned, because of reduced demand for trucks. Toyota builds the full-size Tundra there.
Output in 2007 will be kept at about 150,000 units, below the plant’s capacity of 200,000. Toyota will, however, step up production of the Camry, which is produced at Subaru of Indiana Automotive.
Initial capacity there was for 100,000 cars a year but this will be increased to 200,000 units a year from October 2007.
