Kyodo News reported that the collision tests were conducted at 55 kilometres per hour, 5 km/h faster than before, resulting in an increase of 20% in the amount of energy inflicted on vehicles.
No other automakers have ever conducted crash tests at this speed, Toyota reportedly said.
It will first adopt the body for the fully redesigned Vitz (Yaris) car that goes on sale in Japan in January, Kyodo said.
As the Yaris, this model will also be built in France and a European launch is expected in spring 2005.
