With more than 1,000 incidents reported a year of motorists driving the wrong way and against the flow of traffic, Toyota has come up with a solution, co-developed with Denso and Aisin AW.

From next week, buyers in Japan will be able to specify a dealer-installed wrong-way alert which is added to the onboard navigation system. The alert gives both audible and visual warnings.

The voice alert will tell drivers, ”You may be traveling against the flow of traffic. Please check your direction of travel,” while the on-screen instruction will tell them, ”Warning! Wrong Way!” Toyota said.

The function was made possible by advances in communications-based map-updating technology and in pinpoint position-recognition technology that uses information from global positioning system and gyro and other sensors to determine accurate vehicle movement, it said.

The new navigation system monitors vehicle direction on highways and selected toll roads, including all tollgates, service area ramps, exits and junctions.
