Suzuki Motor Corporation is to buy a 1.6-litre diesel engine from Fiat Powertrain Technologies (FPT) for a new vehicle model – most likely the SX4’s replacement – scheduled to be produced at Magyar Suzuki in Hungary from 2013.

Suzuki has bought-in Fiat’s two-litre diesel for the current Magyar-produced SX4 since 2006; the two firms also share the vehicle model line itself.

Suzuki said fuel consumption reduction goals and today’s trend towards downsized engines led it to choose a 1.6 for its new vehicle, which will be offered with all wheel drive.

Also since 2006, Suzuki has been making FPT’s 1.3-litre diesel engine under licence at Suzuki Powertrain India which produced 200,000 units last year. These engines are used in domestic market models made by Maruti Suzuki and also exported to Magyar Suzuki.
