Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. (FHI), the maker of Subaru automobiles, has announced that Subaru’s new rear-wheel drive sports car, which is currently under joint development with Toyota, will be named “SUBARU BRZ”.

“BRZ” stands for “Boxer engine”, “Rear-wheel drive” and “Zenith”.

The start of production is planned for Spring 2012.

FHI will exhibit the technology concept of the “SUBARU BRZ”, named “SUBARU BRZ PROLOGUE-BOXER Sports Car Architecture II – ” at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2011.

There may also be an eventual hybrid version of the BRZ production version.

Both the BRZ and its Toyota/Scion twin will be reportedly made on the line at Fuji’s Ota plant where Subaru’s former Stella minivehicle was built.
