Subaru parent Fuji Heavy Industries plans to increase annual engine production by 20% to 960,000 units at its Gunma Oizumi plant over the next two years to keep pace with its global ambitions of selling 1.07m vehicles by 2020.

The Nikkei reported the company would invest JPY20bn (US$194m) as it increases production of more fuel-efficient engines as part of its plan to move to a common platform for all its vehicles from 2016.

Nikkei noted this approach will help keep development costs in check and make it easier to build a model in the US if demand justifies it.
