Subaru
maker Fuji Heavy Industries plans to double sales by introducing new models developed
with part-owner General Motors and improving its dealer network.

Though
strong in SUVs, compacts and mid-sized cars, Fuji lacks a model between its
tiny Japanese kei-class sub-compacts and the compact Impreza. It plans to plug
the gap with a model developed jointly with GM.

Fuji has set itself an ambitious Subaru annual sales target of 600,000 vehicles
but is not saying when it thinks that might be achieved.
Current annual sales are 300,000, and Fuji hopes to boost this to 360,000 vehicles
by 2004.
