Strong demand for its SUVs in the US and Japan is expected to end in a record year for Subaru maker Fuji Heavy Industries.

Domestic output is being increased from 594,000 units to a record 640,000 in the current financial year by increasing overtime and adding weekend working. The previous record was 619,000 units in 1986.

The company said it expected to increase global production by 5% to 800,000 units to help meet a forecast 4% increase in sales to some 752,000 units.

The company announced earlier this year that it will increase capacity at its US assembly plant in Indiana by 50% by fiscal 2016 to 400,000 units, taking on an extra 900 workers.

The plant, which employs 3,600, builds the Legacy, Outback and Tribeca models and also builds some Camrys under contract for Toyota which has a 16.5% stake in Fuji Heavy.
