Honda’s Brazilian subsidiary has said it would lay off about 400 workers at its Sao Paulo assembly plant as it decided to halve output there due to parts shortages stemming from the quake and tsunami disaster in Japan.
The planned layoff accounts for 12% of the total workforce, the company told Kyodo News.
The factory produced about 130,000 units in 2010. Daily production there will be halved to about 300 starting in June, the company said.
The union is protesting the planned move with strikes and other measures.
