The recent series of recalls by Japanese car makers continued yesterday when Nissan Motor notified the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport that it is recalling 135,402 units of its Largo minivan.

Nissan said it was making the recall because their sunroofs might come off.

According to a report by local newswire Kyodo News, the ministry had reported that a total of 20 incidents involving Largo sunroofs were reported between September 2000 and July this year affecting vehicles produced from April 1993 until May 1999.

It is thought the sunroofs in question were improperly fitted.

Most of the reported incidents happened when the cars were in motion with the sunroof closed, according to the ministry.

Last week, Japan’s transport ministry issued a written instruction to Toyota Motor urging it to improve its management of vehicle defects.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport asked the company to report by 4 August on how plans to improve the process of recalling defective vehicles.

The move followed a spate of Toyota and Lexus vehicle recalls worldwide and came after the ministry called in Toyota vice president Masatami Takimoto on Thursday to ask him to explain the circumstances surrounding the company’s submission of a recall report in October 2004 in connection with a defect in the Toyota Hilux Surf [4Runner for export] sport utility vehicle.
