The joint venture, Automotive Energy Supply, will gradually ramp up battery production to 65,000 units a year by 2010, the allies told Kyodo News.

The venture will manufacture lithium ion batteries for use in Nissan electric vehicles and hybrid vehicles to be introduced in Japan and the United States in 2010, they said.

The advanced lithium ion batteries feature a compact module comprised of laminated type cells. The batteries also use a manganese type electrode that offers greater thermal stability.

The laminated structure improves cooling, while durability tests on the battery have demonstrated that it has an average run of over 100,000km (62,000 miles) in field tests, they said.
