Nissan engineers are working with researchers at Japan’s Kansai University to reduce the time it takes to charge an electric vehicle.

The researchers are tweaking a capacitor using tungsten oxide and vanadium oxide instead of the usual carbon resulting the charging time to reduce to only 10 minutes.

The capacitor, during the new charging process, was able to retain almost the same capacity and voltage as lithium ion batteries and appeared to retain durability during charging and discharging tests.

The researchers are hoping to change the structure of the capacitor to further decrease the charging time to three minutes.

A Japanese media report said the technology may not be widely available for another decade, however.
