Japanese newspaper Nikkei reported that the Mizushima and Okazaki plants would receive additional welding equipment and, by transferring some Outlander production to the Netherlands, some space will be freed for other models.
At the moment Mitsubishi has capacity to produce 840,000 vehicles a year in its three Japanese plants, according to the Nikkei. By the end of the current financial year capacity should have been increased to 866,000 units.
Just-auto reported last month that Mitsubishi will start producing the Outlander in the Netherlands from next year, freeing up Japanese plant capacity for the Lancer sedan. Up to 30,000 Outlanders could be produced in Europe each year. MMC currently builds the Outlander at its Nagyoa plant at a rate of around 150,000 units a year. Mitsubishi also builds 30,000 variants a year for PSA’s Peugeot and Citroen brands at its Mizushima plant. They will switch to Nagoya freeing more capacity in Mizushima for Lancers.
