Mitsubishi Motors is recalling more than 650,000 minicars in Japan, including the 660cc Minica, because of problems with the air intake duct in the engine compartment.
The carmaker said that a plastic clip that holds the duct onto the car’s body could be damaged and therefore could lead to it falling off and melting, burning or catching fire.

As well as the Minica, the company is also recalled Toppo BJ models manufactured between 1998 and 2011 and sold in Japan and overseas.
Mitsubishi said it is aware of 11 cases of fire suspected to have been caused by the problem as well as 13 cases of burning or melting of the duct.
Reuters noted Mitsubishi has been embroiled in a number of recall-related issues, most notably in 2000 when an insider revealed that it had been hiding customer complaints for more than two decades.
In April, the Japanese government warned the company over delays in a series of recalls between 2010 and 2012.
