Mitsubishi Motors on Tuesday said it would temporarily cut some operations at Japanese plants next month and also try to cut labour costs as vehicle demand falls.

The suspension of production for up to two weeks will allow the automaker to reduce inventory, a spokesman told Agence France-Presse (AFP), adding that the company was negotiating pay cuts with unions.
Mitsubishi Motors had previously this month halted some operations “for a few days and paid 85% of wages for those days the operation was suspended,” the spokesman added.
Mitsubishi Motors last November said it would cut 1,100 jobs by laying off one third of its temporary workforce in Japan.
Other automakers have been reducing temps and permananent employees both in Japan and overseas. Nissan’s UK plant has recently axed 1,200 jobs completely while Honda’s 4,200 workers here have now had their furlough extended as far as June.
