Mitsubishi Motors’ (MMC) Okazaki plant near Nagoya (Japan) has built its five millionth vehicle since opening in 1977 – an Outlander PHEV.

MMC president and CEO Tetsuro Aikawa presented the milestone vehicle to Okazaki city mayor Yasuhiro Uchida for use as a self-sufficient, EV-based, 4WD emergency vehicle in case of natural disaster.

Located next to MMC’s global R&D centre, the 425,000sq m Okazaki plant is one of three vehicle production bases the automaker operates in Japan. Around 1,600 staff currently build the Outlander and RVR/ASX family. In fiscal 2013 (to 31 March, 2014), the factory produced 174,000 vehicles.

The Outlander PHEV is its segment leader in Europe with 18,644 units sold in the January to November period of 2014.
