The automaker, affected by a string of defect coverups and recalls, ”needs to determine a global strategy in an early timing once we can achieve our sales targets as stipulated in our rehabilitation plan,” Masuko reportedly said in Okazaki, Aichi Prefecture.

Mitsubishi Motors has maintained a plant in Okazaki after it postponed a plan to close the plant. Kyodo News said Masuko was speaking to reporters at the Okazaki municipal government office, where he paid a visit to mayor Koichi Shibata.

Masuko reportedly denied a planned top management reshuffle at DaimlerChrysler, Mitsubishi Motors’ largest shareholder, will affect the Japanese automaker’s future reconstruction.

”While maintaining a cooperative relationship, we are keeping the business alliance that is mutually beneficial,” he told Kyodo News.

The report noted that DaimlerChrysler recently announced that Juergen Schrempp will step down later this year as chief executive officer, replaced by Dieter Zetsche, now head of the company’s Chrysler division.
