The automaker claims the Pajero – also sold as the Shogun in Europe and Montero in North America – was descended from the 1936 PX 33 four-wheel-drive Torpedo (the first Japanese 4WD passenger car though only four research units were built) and that the Pajero pioneered a new trend – modern lifestyle-orientated SUVs – when the first generation was launched in Japan in May 1982.

Over four generations, European buyers have made the region the top market worldwide (5,892 units YTD to the end of November, up 29% year on year).

Unusually for an SUV, the Pajero achieved 12 wins in the Dakar Rally as well as four FIA World Cups for cross country rallies.
