Mazda had targeted sales of 15,000 Mazda6 sedans, 8,000 Premacy minivans and 22,000 Mazda 323 small cars this year after selling 22,000 vehicles last year, the report added.

A Mazda spokesman told Reuters that, while sales of the Premacy and the 323 have been on target, demand for the Mazda6 has been picking up every month since its launch in April.

Reuters said he declined to give a revised output figure but said: “Production always follows sales, and sales have jumped beyond our expectations since April thanks to the Mazda6.”

From January to July, Mazda sold a total 36,000 cars, just 9,000 short of this year’s goal, Reuters noted, adding that July sales of the sporty Mazda6, whose popularity has been leading the company’s sales worldwide, reached 2,600 units, about 1,000 more than the monthly target.

Mazda ships CKD kits to China for assembly by partner FAW Car Co., a unit of China’s largest car maker, First Automotive Works, Reuters said.
