It’s been on sale in its native Japan for barely a year and already Mazda Motor Corporation has “reshened”the interior and exterior of its home market Tribute for “a sportier and more stylish look”.

Translation: the car has been criticised for drab looks barely distinguishable from the badge-engineered Ford Escape/Maverick, particularly inside, and this is a quick, cheap initial fix.

In the cabin, black trim throughout replaces battleship grey (Honda just did a similar trick with its HR-V) and there is new mesh fabric for the seat centres with suede for the seat sides and headrests, except on the leather-trimmed GL-X L models.


All versions now have silver-ringed instruments and the GL-X and LX G packages get metal-look (plastic) panels around the audio/heat/vent controls in the dashboard centre and door-mounted power window switches. Some models also gain folding rear seat tables.
