Mazda Motor Corporation on Tuesday announced that Gideon Wolthers has been named senior managing executive officer and CFO (effective December 1), replacing Robert Shanks.

Shanks will be departing Mazda on November 30, 2002 and returning to Ford. His new role will be announced later.
Wolthers, in his new role at Mazda, will oversee all aspects of the company’s financial affairs. He will be instrumental in helping the company meet the financial milestones laid out in its Millennium Plan and ensure the overall integrity of its fiscal reporting.
“Bob Shanks has been a key player at Mazda since 1996. One mark of his professionalism is the strong team he leaves behind,” said company president Lewis Booth.
“The team will now be headed by Gideon Wolthers. His understanding of the entire Mazda business, his extensive international experience and overall leadership skills will help us continue to deliver on the promises of the Millennium Plan.”

By GlobalDataPrior to being named CFO, Wolthers was Mazda’s managing executive officer in charge of corporate planning and cost planning. He joined the Hiroshima-based company in June 2001 from Ford where he served as controller, small/medium vehicle centre, product development in Europe.
In his career, Wolthers has also operated as vice-president, finance at Ford India and director, finance at South Africa Motor Corporation (SAMCOR).
Born in 1955, Wolthers graduated from the University of Pretoria in South Africa. He holds an honours degree in accounting from the University of South Africa and is a member of South Africa’s Institute of Certified Accountants.
