Mazda has told Japan’s transport ministry it is recalling 8,902 of its recently redesigned Atenza cars due to an electric system fault that may cause a fire.
Subject to the recall are Atenzas manufactured between last October and this month.

About 6,700 units of the model have been exported, mainly to Europe, as the Mazda 6.
Kyodo News noted it was reported in Belgium in January that a fire broke out beneath the driver’s seat while the vehicle parked, according to the ministry. No accidents or events have been reported so far within Japan.
The ministry said that a fault has been found in a device which adjusts voltage when electricity is sent from the power generator to the vehicle’s battery, which could result in a short circuit and cause fire.
Mazda is recalling or fixing about 2,500 cars in Australia, as well.

By GlobalDataMeanwhile, the Irish Independent said 52 saloon and estates were being recalled in Ireland.
The paper said the carmaker had identified the fault in a small electrical component used to suppress radio interference. The component could have a tiny crack, might overheat and in extreme cases cause a fire.
