The new model shares the Vitz/Yaris/Echo platform and is 3,855mm long, 1,695mm wide and 1,530mm tall on a 2,370mm wheelbase and comes with a 64kW 1.3-litre petrol engine or a 1.5-litre unit developing 80kW with front wheel drive or 77kW with four-wheel drive. The only transmission offered in Japan is a four-speed automatic.


Both engines have Toyota’s VVTi variable valve timing system and are claimed to emit 75% fewer emissions than permitted under current Japanese regulations with the 2WD versions passing proposed 2010 fuel efficiency standards.


Toyota also claims a similar level of passenger protection as theluxury Celsior (Lexus LS430).


The ist is aimed at young buyers after ‘unique’ vehicles but it will hardly be unique if it meets its montly sales target of 15,000 units.


There is no word yet on exports or overseas production.
