Japan has witnessed a significant fall in the number of sales of imported vehicles in the country as the economic crisis dragged figures down to their lowest levels since 1989.

Sales of imported vehicles, including Japanese cars assembled abroad, fell 37.2% year on year in January, the Japan Automobile Importers Association said.
Broken down, sales of foreign branded cars fell 34.3% to 7,657 units but Japanese branded cars fared worse with a fall of 50.2% to 1,258 units.
The overall year on year fall was the largest since 1968 when association began compiling data. It was also the third month in a row there had been a drop of over 30% on the prior year.
