Honda Motor has announced plans to have a 'self-driving' car on sale by 2020 as it challenges domestic rivals Toyota and Nissan and other automakers in the race for next-generation technology. The company’s statement, ahead of next week’s Tokyo motor show, is a further indication of the growing momentum behind autonomous and assisted-driving technology.

Toyota last week unveiled a modified Lexus GS capable of self-driving on motorways, with lane-changing lanes and overtaking capabilities using a range of on-board sensors and microprocessors.

Other self-driving concepts have been unveiled in recent months by Google, Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Audi.

It is thought that Honda may seek to extend its existing collaboration with General Motors to include the development of self-driving technology. The two companies already collaborate in fuel-cell technology development.
