Honda Motor will install a wind power electricity generation system at a transmission plant in Ohio as part of efforts to promote its environmental initiatives.

The new system, which is expected to become operational by the end of this year, will generate 10% of the energy used at the factory, Honda told Kyodo News.

President Takanobu Ito said the automaker will further strengthen global environmental efforts to reduce CO2 emission by promoting production and sales which better fit environmental regulations and trends in each region.

Honda has also started a wind power generation project in Brazil, the automaker’s biggest vehicle market in South America. The wind farm to be operational in 2014 will enable Honda to generate roughly 85,000 megawatt-hours a year, which is equivalent to its annual electricity consumption for automobile production in the country.

Honda has set up in-house environment committees for North America, South America, Asia and Oceania, Europe, China and Japan to promote environment agendas unique to each country and region.
