Honda Motor is to transfer some of the workforce at its Kumamoto factory, its only Japanese domestic motorcycle production base, to other plants in Japan as part of its move to shift two-wheeler production offshore amid the yen’s historic rise, company officials have said.

Around 400 of the 3,200 employees at the factory in Ozu, Kumamoto Prefecture, will likely be transferred to a four-wheel vehicle factory in Suzuka, Mie Prefecture, and other domestic plants within a few years, the officials told Kyodo News.

The automaker consolidated its motorcycle production at the Kumamoto factory in 2008 after discontinuing manufacturing at a factory in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka Prefecture. However, output at the Kumamoto plant has been far below the annual production capacity of more than 500,000 units in recent years, the report said.
