Honda will introduce a new generation driver assist system with its redesigned Legend before the end of the year, adding a number of new functions including a claimed world-first ‘pedestrian collision mitigation steering’.

Honda’s Sensing system comprises two types of sensors, a millimetre-wave radar located inside the front grille and a monocular camera mounted on the upper, inside part of the windshield. The radar has been further developed and is now able to include pedestrians, regarded as being hard to detect due to their low rate of radio wave reflection as well as the position and speed of the target object.

The camera identifies attributes and sizes of pedestrians and other targets which come in range, approximately 60m ahead of the vehicle, achieving recognition with improved accuracy.

This has been added to the existing driver-assist system along with improved data processing capability and the system now recognises not only its surroundings but also the intentions of the driver and conditions of the vehicle and applies collaborative control over certain functions such as braking and steering.

When there is a risk of collision with a vehicle in front or a pedestrian, the system provides the driver with audio and visual warnings before automatically applying gentle brake pressure. When the distance reduces further, the system brakes hard to support the driver’s collision avoidance effort. If the vehicle strays into an oncoming lane the system also provides warnings and applies the brakes.

The camera also detects the vehicle moving out of its lane including the boundary line on the side strip of the road. When the system forecasts a collision with a pedestrian as a result of the vehicle straying toward the side strip, it provides audio and visual warnings and turns the steering wheel toward the other direction to avoid an accident.
