Honda has developed an improved petrol-electric drivetrain for the redesigned Civic compact model line set to go on sale in North America, Japan and Europe this autumn, the automaker told the the Associated Press (AP).

Honda reportedly said a specific mileage estimate for the new hybrid system would not be provided until later this year, but said it’s about 5% better than current Civic hybrid model, which delivers about 51 miles per [US] gallon under US highway conditions.
Honda UK quotes 57.6 miles per Imperial gallon for the current European-specification manual transmission sedan, under the EC ‘combined’ cycle.
According to AP, the Honda officials in Tokyo also said the new Civic will offer better fuel efficiency than rival Toyota ‘s Prius, the leading model in the hybrid sector.
Toyota recently made a number of minor updates to the Prius but left the European powertrain specification unchanged, a Toyota GB spokesman told just-auto on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the Honda officials told AP that they have fine-tuned the Civic system for the new model line.
