The job cuts would end the employment of temporary workers at the automaker, Kyodo News reported.

Honda said it would cut Japanese output by another 56,000 vehicles by the end of March at factories in Saitama and Mie prefectures.

Total vehicle production in Japan this financial year (ending 31 March) is now seen off about 10% year on year to around 1.17m units, the company said.

Honda had originally planned to make 1.31m units in Japan in fiscal 2008.
