Toyota truck-making subsidiary Hino Motors on Monday said it would start manufacturing mid-size trucks for sale in Canada in April at a factory in the province of Ontario.

The factory, which will make 2,000 trucks a year, will be Hino’s second North American production base after the primary plant it runs in the US state of California, the company said, according to Kyodo News.
Hino will start Ontario production by renting the plant from a local auto parts maker. At the California plant, it has been manufacturing trucks for the entire North American market.
Although Hino has been bringing the trucks made at the California plant to Canada for sale on the Canadian market, it has decided to make trucks in Ontario to cut transportation costs, it said.
Hino expects that its truck sales in Canada will reach 1,400 units in the 2005 business year to 31 March.
