General Motors Corp. and Suzuki Motor Corp. will delay the decision on where to build a jointly developed car until at least September, which is six months later than initially planned.
The four-wheel-drive YGM-1, based on a Suzuki platform, is to be GM’s first passenger car to be designed and built in Asia. In March, GM said the companies would choose a production location for the new model by the end of the first quarter, hinting it would be built at a Suzuki plant.

Negotiations will continue, and both companies are confident a decision will be made in time to take the model to market by the third quarter of 2001. Many Asian production sites are being looked at, including GM’s plant in Thailand, Suzuki’s plants in Taiwan, Indonesia and Japan.
The focus for both GM and Suzuki is cost and quality.
