Japan’s Transport Ministry has said it may order Mitsubishi Fuso trucks and buses off the road if a high-profile recall scheme is not quickened.
According to the BBC, officials are unhappy with the pace of a recall of 65,000 Fuso vehicles over a defect with the clutch housing.
“Users driving a potentially faulty Mitsubishi vehicle could be ordered to have it inspected,” an official reportedly said.
The BBC said Mitsubishi Fuso, spun off from Mitsubishi Motors in January 2003 and 65%-owned by DaimlerChrysler, was this year revealed to have been hiding dangerous defects from the authorities for the past eight years – the clutch defect alone has caused at least 18 accidents since 1992, including one fatal case.
Mitsubishi Fuso is now recalling more than 500,000 vehicles in total, to address a number of potential defects, the BBC said.
