Mitsubishi Fuso Truck & Bus Corp. on Thursday said four former directors have returned some 100 million yen in retirement allowances in connection with the successive cover-ups of vehicle defects by the company in the past.

According to Kyodo News, the four former directors, including former chairman Takashi Usami and former senior executive officer Tadashi Koshikawa, ”voluntarily” declined or returned their retirement benefits – Mitsubishi Fuso had requested half of such benefits be returned in view of their ”social and moral responsibilities” for more than two decades of cover-ups by the automaker.
The report said Mitsubishi Fuso made the announcement along with the release of a report by a team of five external lawyers who investigated the past quality problems from May 2004 until the middle of March this year.
The investigation revealed that the past management had neither implemented appropriate and necessary measures, nor made fundamental corrections, Mitsubishi Fuso reportedly said.
