A Ford statement issued in the US made no other comment but Associated Press (AP) said that Mitsubishi Motors Corporation has recruited Iwakuni as a board member.

AP said this is the first time in Mitsubishi’s 30-year history it appointed an executive from another car maker – other than partner DaimlerChrysler – to its board.

Iwakuni officially replaces Hiroshi Yajima, who is retiring, after a shareholders meeting on June 25, AP added.

Associated Press said that, before heading Ford Japan in 1998, 60-year-old Iwakuni worked for Honda where he was credited with strengthening Honda dealerships.
