Recent tax breaks and subsidies for purchases of eco-friendly vehicleshelped boost August sales 2.3% year on year to 198,265 units, excluding minivehicles, the Japan Automobile Dealers Association said.


Sales of new passenger cars increased 8.2% to 179,766 units but truck sales plunged 33.8% to 17,673 units and bus sales fell 22.5 % to 826 units.


Toyota’s Lexus brand achieved the largest percentage sales growth of 46.9% to 1,745 units, followed by a 22.8% rise to 4,519 units at Mitsubishi, a 13.4% increase to 31,115 units at Honda and a 9% hike to 90,802 units for Toyota.


Nissan’s new vehicle sales declined 1.4% to 31,015 units and Mazda sales were off 2.5% to 13,543 units.
