Both Nissan and Toyota have said they will get production in the Tohuku region back to something like normal this year following last year’s devastating tsunami and earthquake, the Nikkei reported.
Nissan’s plant in Iwaki will produce at least 300,000 engines in fiscal 2012, an increase from this year, said Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn. He also pledged continued investment in the region.
Toyota said subsidiary Kanto Auto Works will produce 30,000 Aqua (Prius C) hybrids this month at its Iwate plant, 50% ahead of original plan.
“We believe Aqua production is aiding the recovery of the Tohoku region and are increasing output,” Kanto Auto president Tetsuo Hattori told the Nikkei.
Elsewhere in the region, other industries are also returning to something like normal with seafood processing and paper and petrochemical firms all pledging a return to pre-disaster production levels.
