Japan’s mainstream automakers have reached a framework agreement to provide financial assistance to developers of electric vehicle charging infrastructure in the country.

The announcement follows a preliminary agreement reached at the end of July between Toyota, Nissan, Honda and Mitsubishi, to help accelerate the roll out of user friendly EV infrastructure throughout Japan.

The four automakers this week started accepting financing applications from potential infrastructure developers. By the second quarter of 2014, a joint organisation will be established by the automakers to manage a membership based charging service for electric vehicle users.

Infrastructure developers a required to provide a minimum level of service, including the establishment of destination charging points in commercial areas with waiting facilities; enroute charging points in service stations, toll road parking areas and at convenience stores and service stations on regular roads.

The development of adequate infrastructure is seen as fundamental for EVs to play a prominent role in driving Japan’s environmental energy policy and reducing the country’s dependence on imported fossil fuels.
