Japan’s main automakers have joined forces to develop low emission engine technology to meet long term future emissions regulations worldwide and to increase their competitive edge against European and other global vehicle manufacturers.
The eight automakers, including Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Suzuki, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Daihatsu and Fuji Heavy [Subaru], with the support of University of Tokyo and Waseda University, launched an initial JPY2bn (US$19.7m), three year R&D programme in April.

The aim is to have an engine design in place by 2020 that reduces diesel carbon dioxide emissions by 30% compared with 2010 levels. The core technology will also be applied to petrol engines.
