Sales of new vehicles in Japan, excluding minivehicles, rose 7.3% year on year in August to 232,372 units, the Japan Automobile Dealers Association said.
Sales of passenger cars increased 8.7% to 205,012 units. Sales of cars with engines larger than two litres rose 7.2% to 98,386 units and those of smaller cars gained 10.1% to 106,626 units.

However, sales of trucks edged down 0.4% to 26,529 units and bus volume plunged 31.8% to 831 units, Kyodo News reported.
