Imported cars sold in Japan rose in October – the third straight monthly rise – increasing 9.1 per cent from a year ago, writes Associated Press citing an industry group Tuesday (7/11/00). According to the news agency, the sales rise follows on from year-on-year increases for September totalling 2.5 per cent, with August registering a 6.3 per cent increase.

Citing the Japanese Automobile Importers Association, Associated Press writes that a total of 19,231 new imported vehicles were registered for the month of October – up from the 17,634 figure recorded for the same month a year ago. A 9.1 per cent increase – to 18,565 – was recorded for the passenger cars, while truck sales recorded an 8.1 per cent increase to 661.

German vehicles are the best-selling imports within Japan, with October seeing a sales increase by the top three selling brands, reports AP.

Volkswagen recorded a 19 per cent rise – selling 4,696 vehicles – with it taking a 24.2 per cent share of Japan’s import car market.

Sales of 4,151 were recorded for Mercedes-Benz – a rise of 65.4 per cent – with the manufacturer taking a 21.58 per cent market share. An 11 per cent increase was registered by BMW, with sales totalling 2,237.

Top-selling US brand was Chevrolet – with sales of 687 vehicles – a rise of 2.5 per cent which accounted for 3.57 per cent of the Japanese import market, says the news agency.
