Italy’s importer association – UNRAE – estimates that February new car sales in the country will be down by around 30% on last year.

However, the outlook for March is improved as scrappage incentives have lifted orders – as opposed to registrations – the organisation says.

Gianni Filipponi, the UNRAE secretary general, told Reuters: “The incentives are starting to work and the orders seem in fact to be at levels that are not too far from those of February 2008.”

Italy’s transport and infrastructure ministry will publish February’s numbers on Monday.
