Fiat chairman Luca Cordero di Montezemolo said on Wednesday the takeover of Germany’s Opel from US auto giant General Motors was “a lottery,” adding that Fiat had “done everything possible” to win the bid.

“We have done what we had to do and so we have the feeling that we have done everything possible,” the Fiat chairman said, Italian news agencies reported, according to Agence France-Presse (AFP).
“In a lottery, it’s best to wait for the result,” he said, adding that a merger between Fiat and Opel would be “an extraordinary opportunity.”
The German government is expected to choose its preferred bidder for Opel this evening but one state premier has cautioned this would not be a final deal, it would instead be a framework on which US and German governments could work out an arrangement.
