Registrations rose by 27.38% in March from the figure 12 months earlier to 269,800 new vehicles, the ministry said. In February, registrations had increased by 8% year on year.

However, AFP said, the Italian car makers’ association Anfia noted the sharp increase in new car registrations was largely explained by tax advantages on new car purchases which expired at the end of March.

Fiat, Italy’s most popular brand, saw its registrations increase by 10.97% over the year to March, underperforming the across-the-board increase. Its share of its main market, Italy, remained steady at around 20%, after having fallen from about 25% in the year to February. The two other brands belonging to the embattled industry giant Fiat Auto both did better in March, with Lancia registrations up 22.87% and Alfa Romeo up 16.07% over the year.
