Workers at Fiat’s Maserati luxury car plant in Modena, northern Italy, went on strike on Tuesday after management refused to answer union fears that production could be moved to the Bertone factory in Turin.

Giordano Fiorani, the regional secretary of the Fiom union, told AFP that all 700 workers walked out.

Modena is Maserati’s only production centre.

“There have been press reports in recent days of a transfer of Maserati production to the Bertone factory in Turin,” he said. “We have asked the management to refute (the reports), but we have not had an answer. We have a meeting planned for 16 February and I hope we will have some reassurances then.”

The Bertone plant was bought last year by Fiat.

The Maserati management were not available for comment.
